Vic Paragas - Champion
2009 Duval Bogey Cup
There has to be the Internet or some kind of Wi-Fi in heaven…How else can our friends, Val and Ed up there, keep track of our SWAG tournament schedule and orchestrate a perfect sunny day at Whitetail?
Even the US Open which had 7 days at it needed a Monday of so-so weather just to finish.
Swaggers never squander an opportunity to shine and grind out some good scores. Dan DeGuzman blew out his hip early in the round and was hit on the chest by an errant shot. Limping and nursing a dimpled lump he turns in a score of net 70 and promptly collects some moolah from his victims.
Moral lesson: we need lawyers in SWAG…this incident could have raised some funds to cover Mr. Treasurer’s financial woes.
The most dramatic event of the day was the culmination of 4 years of hard work. All of the tears for coming in 2nd place just two weeks ago, hundreds of hours practicing and years of rewriting his victory speech that was so elusive, sa wakas – Vic Paragas bags his first win! An impressive 4 under (net 68) sealed the victory. Cash Castillo collected the runner-up award as he ousted Kelly Concepcion in a count back of their 2 under (net 70).
Some of the members insisted that their wind shirts and rain gear would pass the coat and tie requirement at The Manor Restaurant’s lobster fest…Vic dashed their wishful thinking and rounded up everybody for a dining celebration at Pandan.
When asked how he pulled off this major accomplishment, Vic confessed that he was so engrossed with beating his nemesis, Lino Carin that he had little time to worry about his score. Vic explained, ”Tee to green, I matched his every shot and putt. It was a merry-go-round of a match as I stayed in the present”. In the finishing holes, “Lino Carin accusingly asked me how many strokes I had to reach the green…I explained that I would be putting for 5 at that point. He wouldn’t take my answer and insisted that I was laying 4!! We went back and forth with that argument all the way to the clubhouse. In retrospect, that classic stalemate banter prevented me from getting ahead of myself and my friend Lino Carin knowingly steadied my nerves for my sweetest victory and the bonus - Bayad siya!”.
A knowing smile was also noted on Dr. Jun Bada as the celebration waned…Known for generously sponsoring a few of these victory events to help previous champs, he slipped his wallet back deep into his pocket. “Mahaba ang pisi nitong si Vic. After all 4 years niyang pinag iipunan ito!! Kayang-kaya niya ang gastos!!”.
Congrats to all the winners, especially to the Champ........finally!!!!
